Well, it’s that time again, the start of the footy season. With all of the hard work behind us from the pre-season, we started our campaign with a game against Coomera Magpies. Although it was a bit abbreviated due to the fact that the AFLQ in their wisdom cancelled all Reserve Grade Fixtures thinking that it would wreck the grounds with an overload of traffic after all the rain of the previous week. Hence there were some very angry ressies players at all clubs. After all the hard work that has been put into our ground over the summer, two games on the weekend would have been a breeze.
With a mixture of some new and last year’s players, we put together a strong side for our first outing and with more numbers to come back it is only to get stronger for both seniors and reserves. We started the game very strongly, kicking 5 goals to 3 in the 1st quarter. New players Heath Munro and Steve Knight got lots of early ball and with all players contributing all around the ground, it was a promising start.
The 2nd quarter saw us go goal less but a strong defence effort saw us stop giving Coomera any real momentum and we had the scores level at 5.3.33 a piece at half time.
In the 3rd quarter we dropped our intensity and feel back into some old habits and let Coomera skip out to a goal lead. We still managed to kick a goal late in the quarter to give ourselves a chance going into the final quarter.
The last quarter started well with a lot of attacking moves but we failed to capitalise on our chances. With the ball moving up and the down the ground, Coomera in the last only managed 1 goal but also missed a few, due to our constant pressure we put them under. It was a goal less quarter for us but that did not reflect the effort that was put in, with the good old Rooster fighting spirit making a come back. It is great to see that this new batch of Roosters make a team fight for victory. On the day, Coomera probably had more winners all over the ground especially in the 2nd half then we did which in the end was the difference between the two sides.
I was very pleased overall with our first up performance with a lot of players really putting in. Special mentions to Steve Knight who had a great first up game for the club, young Jordie who did a superb job at centre half back, Tom who probably spent the most time on the ball of all our followers who went out of the game towards the end but that was understandable and also Omar who won the players player award for continuously putting his body on the line and who gave us lots of options to bring the ball forward.
There was a lot to be proud of in this game, fellas, a solid first up performance but there is some disappointment that we let a great chance slip by of winning our first game for the year. We will need to work on a few things at training for improvement but also focus on what we did well. If we can get the 4th quarter together, we will give this competition a bit of a shake up this year.
I would like to thank all those players who started training back in November (don’t need to mention them, they know who they are). These guys have set the foundation and the level of commitment required to move the Roosters forward. Also to the new coaching appointments made by the club, we are really working well together and it’s great to have a lot of fresh new ideas that are all about making the playing group better.
Remember guys, one solid performance doesn’t make a season; we know we have to learn to be more consistent. If we do that, wins will come our way. Bring on Calamvale and let’s have a big win!
GO ROOSTERS!

Thanks to all that attended our working bee, much was achieved by the hardworking troops that came along. With still a few things to be done, dont be afraid to offer your expertise. If you have no expertise just pretend and offer anyway. |
